What Can (and Can't) Go in a Rental Dumpster in Chattanooga

Every hauler's contract has a prohibited-items list, and violating it can mean surcharges, a refused pickup, or the whole load being re-billed as contaminated. Here's what actually flies in the Chattanooga market.

Green light: what's always fine

• Household junk, furniture, clothing, toys
• Wood, lumber, drywall, trim, cabinets
• Flooring, carpet, tile
• Roofing shingles (mind the weight)
• Yard waste: brush, limbs, leaves
• Appliances without refrigerant (washers, dryers, stoves)
• General construction and demolition debris

Yellow light: allowed with conditions or fees

• Mattresses and box springs — many local haulers charge a per-item fee, commonly around $35.
• Concrete, brick, block, dirt, asphalt — allowed only in a dedicated heavy-debris container (usually 10-yard) or capped at a few cubic yards. Never mix with regular debris.
• Large appliances with refrigerant (fridges, freezers, AC units) — accepted by some haulers only if the refrigerant has been professionally evacuated and tagged.
• Stumps and root balls — size limits vary; ask before you drop a 500-pound oak stump in the box.

Red light: never in the dumpster

These are prohibited by essentially every hauler in the Chattanooga area:

• Paint, stains, and solvents (even "mostly empty" cans)
• Motor oil, gasoline, and other fuels
• Propane tanks
• Tires
• Batteries (car and lithium)
• Asbestos and asbestos-suspect material
• TVs, computers, and most electronics
• Fluorescent bulbs and ballasts
• Medical waste
• Ammunition
• Contaminated soil

So where does the red-light stuff go?

Chattanooga has legitimate outlets for almost all of it:

• Household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, batteries): Hamilton County runs household hazardous waste collection events — check the county's solid waste page for the next date.
• Electronics: several Chattanooga recyclers accept TVs and computers, and some retailers take small electronics free.
• Tires: most tire shops accept old tires for a small per-tire fee.
• Scrap metal: appliance and metal recyclers in town often pay you.

The "wet load" trap nobody warns you about

An open container plus a Tennessee Valley thunderstorm equals hundreds of pounds of absorbed water in carpet, drywall, and upholstery — and your load is billed by weight at the scale. If rain's coming and your debris is absorbent, tarp the box. Cheap insurance.

When in doubt, ask before you toss
