10 Yard vs 20 Yard Dumpster: Chattanooga Guide

· Chattanooga Dumpster Connect

These are the two most-rented sizes in Chattanooga, and they're also the two people mix up most. A 20-yard isn't just "a bigger 10-yard" — the two boxes are built for different kinds of debris, and picking wrong costs you either a second haul or money left on the table. Here's the head-to-head.

Side by side

10 Yard 20 Yard
Dimensions 12' L × 8' W × 3.5' H 22' L × 8' W × 4.5' H
Capacity ≈ 3 pickup truck loads ≈ 6 pickup truck loads
Weight limit 1–2 tons typical 2–3 tons typical
Chattanooga price $295–$425 $349–$500
Footprint needed Fits almost any driveway ~22 ft length, ~60 ft clearance to back the truck in

The price gap is smaller than the capacity gap — you're often paying $50–$75 more for double the volume. That's the trap: a 20-yard looks like the better deal on paper, but it's only a better deal if you'll actually fill it.

Where the 10-yard wins

  • Garage and attic cleanouts. A typical single-car garage purge fills a 10-yard with room to spare.
  • Small bathroom remodels. One bathroom's worth of tile, vanity, and drywall rarely clears 2 tons — see our bathroom remodel dumpster guide for why the smallest room hits the weight limit hardest.
  • Concrete, brick, dirt, and other heavy debris. Most Chattanooga haulers only offer a dedicated 10-yard for heavy material, capped well short of full, because a filled-to-the-top 10-yard of concrete would already be over-road-legal weight.
  • Tight driveways. Older streets in St. Elmo, North Shore, and parts of Signal Mountain often can't clear the 60 feet of straight approach a 20-yard truck needs to back in. A 10-yard's shorter box gives the driver more margin.
  • Yard waste and small storm cleanup. A few fallen limbs and a couple days of raking rarely need more than a 10-yard — see our yard waste vs. brush pickup guide for when to skip the dumpster entirely.

Where the 20-yard wins

  • Kitchen remodels. Cabinets, countertops, flooring, and drywall from a full kitchen gut routinely fill a 15–20 yard — see the kitchen remodel dumpster guide for a room-by-room breakdown.
  • Roof tear-offs. As a rule of thumb, about 10 squares of 3-tab shingles per 10 yards of container. Most Chattanooga roofs run 20–25 squares, which pushes past what a 10-yard can hold even before you hit the weight limit — check our roofing dumpster sizing guide for square-footage math.
  • Multi-room cleanouts and estate cleanouts. Clearing more than one room, or a whole house before a sale, generates enough bulky (not necessarily heavy) volume that a 10-yard means a guaranteed second trip.
  • Deck and fence demolition. Lumber is bulky but light per cubic foot, so the 20-yard's extra volume gets used without tripping the weight cap.

The mistake that costs the most

Renting a 10-yard for a kitchen remodel because it's cheaper, then discovering halfway through demo day that the box is full and the crew is standing around waiting on a swap-out. In Chattanooga, an extra haul runs $250–$400 on top of what you already paid — more than double the price difference between the two sizes in the first place. If your project is anywhere near the line between the two, size up.

The reverse mistake is rarer but real: renting a 20-yard for a concrete-and-dirt job when a dedicated 10-yard heavy-debris container was the only legal option anyway, and paying for volume you couldn't use.

Quick decision guide

  • One room, one weekend, light debris → 10 yard
  • One room, heavy debris (tile, concrete, plaster) → 10 yard, but confirm the tonnage allowance before you start
  • Whole kitchen, full roof, multiple rooms → 20 yard
  • Tight driveway with no truck clearance → 10 yard regardless of volume, or ask about street placement (Chattanooga requires a CDOT Work Zone Permit for public street placement — see our dumpster permit guide)
